Developing Zhuhai’s Sustainable Competitiveness: A proposal

Zhuhai is a beautiful city located in south china. Through 20 years of development, Zhuhai has become a garden-like modern city. At present, Zhuhai functions as a Special Economic Zone, a Nation high-tech Developing Zone and a Duty-Free Industrial Zone simultaneously. Its GDP increased from 200 million RMB in 1979 to 23.5 billion RMB in 1997. The actual foreign direct investment volume increased from $4.18 million to $1 billion at an annual growth rate of 35.7% during the some period. Based on the historical data of foreign direct investment in Zhuhai, the figure is projected to be $1.4 billion in 2000 and $2 billion in 2005, respectively. Sustainable development of Zhuhai is of great importance for catching up with the Asian Four Little Dragons and leading the development of the Special Economic Zones in China. The foreign investment is one of the important driving forces for the growth of Zhuhai’s economy. In this paper we will introduce, the Double Diamond Model, and examine the opportunities and threats facing Zhuhai.
